Here's a question that I've not heard anyone ask before:

Gasoline prices in countries such as the United Kingdom and Norway can sometimes reach $5 per gallon-because of high taxes. According to the Wall Street Journal, taxes in the United Kingdom account for 80 percent of the pump price, while the Europe-wide average is between 60 and 70 percent. In Germany, gasoline taxes account for a whopping 20 percent of all government revenues.

Cool.

So every 48 aluminum soda cans that you recycle are the equivalent in energy savings of one gallon of gas.

Therefore, you should make one of these.

Europe levies much higher fuel taxes in order to create an incentive for fuel efficient vehicles.

To be fair, the US has a lot more interdependency and need to move people and goods over long distances than europe does, and the pollution problems are more difficult there due to weather patterns and geography.

Another point is that despite it's refining failures, the US is also an oil producing country. At this point, IIRC, taxes in the US are about 16% a gallon.

I think it's even higher than that, isn't it? I thought it was closer to 19-20% taxes. Crude prices are over 55%, refining costs around 22% (which have doubled in the recent past, since Katrina), and the remaining bit is marketing, distribution, station markup and so on.

The numbers look to be different on different websites, but the ratios are similar.
