Possible sword attack wounds 5 in Minneapolis

Staff reports, Star Tribune
Last update: August 09, 2006 – 9:53 AM

An attack, possibly using a two-and-a-half-foot sword, apparently left as many as five people with stab wounds early today in Minneapolis, according to broadcast reports.

Police received a 911 call to an apartment building at 31st Street and Lyndale Avenue S. at around 3:30 a.m., WCCO-TV reported.

Neighbors reported hearing a scuffle in one of the upstairs apartments and then the sound of people running from the scene, the station said. Police found two people with stab wounds in an apartment and recovered a sword, according to reports.

The victims were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. Their conditions were not reported.

Witnesses said paramedics left the apartment carrying a bag containing severed fingers, WCCO said.

Three other people later showed up at the medical center with stab wounds and were arrested, KSTP-TV says.

No other information was available.

Freaky-- that's just a couple of blocks from my house. That corner only has two "apartments", and both are senior assisted-living spaces. The other two corners are businesses. I'm thinking it must be a rental duplex nearby.

This happened in the apartment building where the writer/director of my Fringe show lives.

Here's a link to his blog. (Warning to other: contains disturbing pics.)

Oy.

From the WCCO story, it seems like somebody in the apartment was being robbed and used the sword to defend himself from the burglars.

I'm real curious about this now, as I have various implements of impalement about my house for just such an occasion.

...including mine, which was used by MLRF in the movie, and is intended for exactly this purpose in my home.

oh my...

I used to live on 34th and Lyndale, so I know exactly the area they're talking about.. I did think the area was a little dangerous but I figured I was more likely to be hurt by a gun and not a sword, maybe a knife

It's actually one of the least dangerous neighborhoods in Minneapolis. Violent crime is rare, but it does happen-- like that guy who got shot in uptown right behind Calhoun square.

There have been a few mugging type robberies, and a few burglaries that I know of. Never heard of a sword attack before though.

I'm reminded of the story of a kid who died when one of the "decorative" swords hanging on the wall of his parents' apartment fell off the wall and stabbed him...

Swords don't kill people. It's the loss of blood that kills people.

I used the story as an opportunity to make fun of a couple (former) WOW guildmates who were big LARPers and all excited about moving to a big enough apartment to be able to display their sword collection.

They got pissy at me making fun of LARPing and said "yeah? well, I think motorcycles are lame!" I replied, "My motorcycle won't fall off the wall and kill my kid, at least."
