Turns out it was a bad jack, corroded over time. Disconnected a couple of unused wires, and all is working fine now. And I found a loose wire so I have the main phone line up in the studio again. However, now I have to fix a light socket in the basement. It's one of those pull-chain switches that the switch broke. Just one more thing to add to the list.
