Okay, the past couple of nights I've been working on some concept sketches for the Big Broken Box™, based on a bunch of texture photos that I took of various houses and fences and such. I've tried to equalize the colors a bit more toward what I'm really looking at.

The door is white, which I don't like. It's made to be painted, but I'm not sure what color to paint it yet. I'm thinking the same charcoal gray as the stucco, but I'm open to suggestions.

Here are a couple of different ideas.

version 1

version 2

I like the first one more, I think.

It's still concept sketching, but I'm pretty much zeroing in on the look that I want.

One thing I've always read about exterior decorating is to make the front door the focal point by using a different color -- forest green, deep red, or a tan with a grayish tone to blend with the rock might be nice. Also, I'd suggest not having the exterior stucco be charcoal gray. I love that color, too, but on a house it can really make it look old and dirty. Try a cream, eggshell or very light gray.

I really dislike the light-colored stucco exteriors-- they pick up dirt and look like crap way too easily, as any drive around this neighborhood will show.

I might try something like a burnt umber and see what that looks like. I'm a lot more fond of earth tones.

Besides, I'm old and dirty, why shouldn't my house reflect that? :)

Burnt umber! That sounds really nice. Go with that. Remember, you wanted to make sure your house had curb appeal for eventual resale value. In order to do that, houses have to "pop" visually. If you went with the burnt umber thing, the door could be a beautiful charcoal grey, then. Use the charcoal as an accent color. Nice....

Number one. Totally. And GeekGoddess is right about color. The door should contrast the stucco, no matter what color that is. You like blue, how about a nice navy blue?

I'll try some different colors for the door and see what it looks like.
