Major-league crash today. Hosed up my user folder, actually created a new one that the computer defaults to now, which messed up all of my settings; shortcuts, .ini files, the whole ball of wax. I'm pretty much dead in the water for any kind of work because I'm having to reset everything, finding the right paths to stuff and all.

And our network admin is out today.

The way to fix that is to log in, while in Safe Mode, to the default 'Administrator' account, go to c:\Documents and Settings and move the folder with your profile name out to some other location. Then, create a folder c:\Documents and Settings with the same name and copy the contents of the old folder back in. Then reboot normally and everything should come back up exactly as it was.

Of course, if you've already created a new user folder without that previous step you're hosed if you used the same name...

Two problems with that.

I do not have access to the default administrator account (that's the IT admin's purvey), and the NTUSER and NTUSER.DAT files are corrupted in such a way as they can't be deleted, even from the Administrator login.

I think this may be a good time to upgrade to the new machine anyway. It's not opportune as we're in crisis mode, but it's been waiting for several months.
