Well, the new XP machine is up and running. I'm still installing software-- cripes does this take forever-- but it seems stable.

I think that XP deliberately slows down the installation of Office 2000 to encourage an update to Office XP.

Installing Office 2000 under XP is a pain in the ass.

Office 2000 requires several fonts by filename. XP not only has those fonts under a different name, it doesn't allow you to change them. To do that, you have to move the file to a different folder, rename it, set it to read only, then move it back. Of course to do that, you have to exit out of the installation for office 2000.

Then, during the installation, office 2000 installs files which XP doesn't recognize until after you exit the installation.

It's pretty damn frustrating.

Okay, I am giving up on Office 2000, at least for now. Microsoft makes it annoyingly difficult, most likely because they want me to drop several hundred dollars on a new office version. So for now I am going this route:

We'll see how this works out.
