Heading into the 21st Century

Being as I'm heading out of the state for an extended period, I'm considering getting a cell phone. And I'm trying to get the best deal.

The primary use will be calling and talking to Barb. I know that there are cell phone plans where communication between phoned doesn't charge cell minutes.

Anybody have any advice on cellular plans, what to get/what to avoid?
