I was up until almost 1:00 this morning getting all the tax stuff
together to send. Dropped them in the mail this morning, along with the
checks needed to pay both federal and state. Considering that yesterday
I had over $14k in the account, I most definitely don't today. I have
enough left to make sure I get back to Minneapolis next weekend, and to
cover basic expenses to the end of the month, and that's about it.
However, I'm caught up on all of the bills.
When it gets down to it, I'm pretty much leaving Iowa with nothing. All
of the "extra" money went into the house remodeling and repair. Which
does put me ahead in the long run, and was absolutely necessary, so I'm
not faulting, just observing. It would have been nice to save up a chunk
of change to finance a movie or two, but c'est la vie.
It does put a damper on my "prison release" party plans. I will very
likely have to find an alternative to the Sheraton, but I'm still vying
for a hot tub. I don't think the Big Broken Box(tm) will be in any shape
to have company yet unless a miracle happens or I manage to get a
cleaning crew together that is hale and hearty enough to declare war on
the beast with few casualties.
Of course, the house needs more work. The front porch alone is major
work that will cost many thousands of dollars-- figuring about $4-5k
just for the materials, and that does not include the windows yet.
I picked up a book on building codes yesterday. Pretty heavy duty: a
little thin on plot, but chock full of information on what you need to
do to be up to date with standard building practices. Considering how
much work I'm doing on the Big Broken Box(tm), a worthwhile investment.
It even includes a section on soundproofing that actually has useful
Excited about getting back home.
